As a result of the 2004 Avian Influenza outbreak in the Fraser Valley, the BC Poultry Association started the Poultry Biosecurity and Emergency Response Initiative. The Initiative developed a mandatory biosecurity program for the regulated sector of the poultry industry and recognized that the non-regulated sector could benefit from some of the knowledge obtained through the development of the mandatory program.
The BC Poultry Association recognized that the non-supply managed poultry sector is very diverse and each production system is unique. Through extensive consultation with supply managed poultry producers, non-supply managed poultry producers, Ministry of Agriculture representatives and other experts, the Self-Assessment Tool and Biosecurity Guide were created.
Protectmyflock.ca has been created to help get the Guide and Tool into the hands of the poultry producers that need it. The goals are to:
This program is being facilitated by the BC Chicken Marketing Board with funding provided by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada through the Investment Agriculture Foundation. The BC Chicken Marketing Board will be using basic website statistics, such as number of visitors, obtained through Google Analytics in order to determine the level of outreach obtained for the project. This program and website is intended to be completely anonymous, as such no personal information is being collected or distributed.
